Direct Detection

Direct (square-law) detection receivers are simpler and less costly than their coherent detection counterparts. Direct detection receivers deal only with the square of the received electric field and, as a consequence, lose all the phase information of the optical signal.

CoreOptics’ 40G transponders use direct detection receivers and our exclusive 40G SERDES chipset. For example, the 40G/43G VSR transponder module is designed to provide a compact form factor and low power dissipation for client-side network applications of up to 2 km, and CD tolerance of 40 ps/nm. Other key features include:

  • Reduced power consumption
  • Small form factor (3.5” x 4.5”)
  • Supports both 40/43 Gb/s
  • Full compliance to MSA specification

With 10G services converging on the client side, there are new connectivity requirements for low-cost and reliable second-source alternatives. The CoreOptics’ 40G VSR MSA transponder module is the only true second source available on the market today.
